news, etc...

made a wonderful discovery this afternoon. i'm housesitting in southern Walnut Creek (Rudgear Road) this week so during my 4 hours off everyday i've been going into town to do my writing and photo editing at Pacific Bay Coffee Company, what i thought was the best wifi cafe in entire county. i went in yesterday (Saturday) around 12:30pm and the place was empty. it is not a large cafe and there are only a few seats where one can plug their laptops into power outlets. so today i thought going in at the same time would warrant the same results. wrong! they have people play live music on Sunday afternoons so the place was packed. i noticed this all while i drove by. didn't even have to go inside to try to fight for a seat to decide that i'd have to find somewhere else to work.

so my next thought was Starbuttz up on Main Street. killed that thought quickly. then i scanned my memory to see where the next place i'd get wifi at was. didn't want to go to Starbuttz in Danville and didn't even think of going to the library. then it occurred to me; the one place in Walnut Creek that i have never even been to before; a little place called La Scalla (or something) near the corner of Main St. and Civic. i didn't even know if they had wifi and i doubted that they had power outlets. so i circled up that way and found a parking place right in front on the street. on weekdays i'd have to feed the parking meter there...

before i even got out of the car (i was sure i would not like working here) i opened my laptop to see if the place was giving off a wifi signal. it was! so i went on inside. there were probably four people at tables with laptops, so i thought, hmmm - all the great tables with power outlets were taken. i thought that i'd just stay for a little while, have a coffee, write a blog entry... i ended up staying for 4 hours. this place is genius, really! they have these huge round tables that my monster sized laptop fits on with tons of room to spare, AND all along the wall around the cafe is a power bar with more than enough outlets for all the laptop users the place could hold! i've never seen such a thing in any cafe before. outrageous! i took a table right next to the window and the service counter. this turned out to be a great seat because i turned on my webcam and had it focused so that you could see me working as well as the ladies behind the counter AND the customers standing in line.

the atmosphere in this place is very European - dark, yet there are spot lights that fall just right upon your table, and they have music playing very softly... either classical or jazz. okay, so get this. the most amazing piece of info i have on this place. when i left and was half way to my car i thought, hmmm, i wonder what their hours are. Monday thru Thursday they are open till MIDNIGHT. Friday and Saturday they are open till 1AM! Sunday they close at 11pm. OH.MY.GOD!!! i have found a new place to live!!!

also, i paid $1.85 for a cup of coffee today and $1.00 for a refill. larges. yesterday at Pacific Bay i paid $2.50 for a coffee and $1.85 for a refill. questions? i didn't think so...
